LINDA TUTTLE
THERE IS A LONG HAIRED, LONG BODIED, BEAUTIFUL CALICO CAT HAT COMES UP ON OUR DECK TO EAT IN THE EVENING. SHE IS AFRAID OF US ALTHOUGH WE HAVE BEEN FEEDING HER FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. SHE SHOWS HERSELF ON THE LAST STEP OF THE DECK SO THAT WE CAN SEE HER. WE GO PUT HER WATER AND FOOD IN THE SAME PLACE EVERY EVENING. SHE WAITS UNTIL SHE HEARS THE DOOR SHUT BECAUSE SHE KNOWS THAT WE WENT INSIDE. WE DO NOT KNOW IF SHE IS WILD OR IF SHE BELONGS TO SOMEONE. WE LIVE RURAL ON TEN ACRES IN THE MOUNTAINS BUT THERE ARE HOUSES SCATTERED AROUND. WE WOULD LOVE TO LET HER IN BUT SHE WILL NOT GET NEAR US. ANY THOUGHTS FROM ANYONE?
Sometimes local rescue organizations will lend you live traps so you can get her to see if she will be able to be tamed. It’s hard to know because if a cat has been on it’s own for a long time, they have a hard time trusting people again. I would say try after you feed her sit somewhere nearby outside quietly reading or something, not looking at her and see if she’ll come… it may take a long time but it could be worth it.
