Yes, I’m one of those dog moms that makes sure the pooch gets the best in food, treats, toys and bedding. (On my bed of course). We received a great new dog treat cookbook and decided to give one of the recipes a try. Peanut butter is always a hit with our labrador rescue so that had to be in the mix. We chose the Sesame Peanut Butter Biscuits recipe only we didn’t have sesame seeds or wheatgerm.. oh well, When I cook for the humans I always just go with what I have in the house and wing it, so that’s the kind of cooking the fur kid gets too.
You Bake’ em DOG BISCUITS Cookbook
by Janine Adams has more than 50 tasty recipes that your dog will beg for… and they weren’t kidding.
We made these cute dog cookies in the afternoon and gave him a couple of the uglier ones to sample and then before bed, put them all onto a plate and cleaned up the kitchen. Dobby apparently thought about them all night long because this morning instead of going to check on the cats or asking to go outside, he went right to the kitchen and sat and stared at the Peanut Butter dog cookies.
They were super simple and seemed to work fine with my substitutions.
Official Dog Biscuit Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 1/4 cups of whole wheat flour (or coconut flour if your pet has grain issues) (plus extra for rolling out)
- 3/4 cup wheat bran or oat bran
- 1/4 cup natural peanut butter (no weird stuff.. just peanuts and salt)
- 1/4 cup milk or coconut milk (You know I’m a fan of Coconut oil)
- 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 2 eggs
- Dog Bone Cookie cutter
Dobby Dog’s Mom substitutions
- 2 1/4 cups of regular flour (no whole wheat)
- 3/4 cup of oatmeal (I didn’t have wheat bran, so I smashed the organic oatmeal with the other ingredients in the Ninja blender)
- everything else is the same
Topping
- 1 egg beaten with a pinch of salt
- Sesame seeds (I didn’t have any so I added some leftover dried blueberries)
Dog Cookie Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350º
- Place parchment paper on cookie sheet
- Blend peanut butter and milk in food processor
- Here I added the whole grain oatmeal and blended
- Add applesauce, blend
- Dump the wet ingredients into the mixing bowl with the measured flour
- Stir until wet and dry ingredients turn into a stiff dough
- Roll out on a lightly floured surface to 1/4″ – 1/2″ thickness
- Use dog bone, fire hydrant or seasonal cookie cutter to make them fancy
- Brush egg mixture on top of the biscuits and top with sesame seeds (if you have them)
The baking time depends on whether or not you want a softer biscuit type dog treat or a harder one that the dog can chew on for a while. I baked these until lightly browned about 12 minutes. To have them be more like a bone consistency cook at a lower temperature until they are very hard.
As you can see from the look on Dobby Dogs face.. the effort was worth it, and I believe pretty cost effective.
